27/613 – The parent’s respect

Yaakov, Béla Orbán

"Honor thy father and thy mother"

-Remember the past, wait for the future and live your Calling in submission...

Here is one of Ten Verbs (Commandments) that is very often explained through the distorting mirror of humanism, in a Hellenistic way, while its essence and its Jewish explanation is at hand.

The respect of parents does not correspond to the acceptance of the parental will without any conditions!
Especially in cases where one or both parents are the obstacles to the fulfillment of God's Laws, or when they impose the parental power in place of God's power.

The respect of parental rules and words changes by reaching adulthood!
From this moment, we are no longer in the obligation of doing anything that does not fit the Laws of God.
Jewish laws even go until accepting the rebelliousness of children in these particular cases!

At best naturally, the parental will can correspond to God's Will. However, from the adulthood, everybody is responsible for his own acts and decisions, as well as for knowing or not the Will of God. All this is made individually and in an absolute freedom: well or badly, choosing the blessing or the curse.

People's behavior and lifestyle in accordance with God is passed on to children by their parents, in case these live in submission to God and in communion with Him.
This is this blossoming life, this completeness which we often hear about and which can come true in our lives.

Because Jewish thinking is particularly sensitive to the movements and to the events of its surroundings, it think important to remember the past and history every day of their life.

According to the Jewish thinking, the essence of the Holy Scriptures is:
God's promise is the same in all times. What is thus important for me, it is to know my place, my Calling and my role in History!
And this: within a community, within a people, quite as the people of Israel thought and always think. We have a collective Calling and duty.

The aim of History thus is to have a sanctified, blessed, subdued and active life in God...
This can only come true in a faith without any conditions, as well as through the continuity of the generations, in a common consciousness, faith and identity which is no other than the identification to God's Will.

It is for this reason that History’s storms and torments never provoke panic among the Jewish community, but they rather try to find the Will and the Project of God in every difficult situation...
Thus, they do not look for the causes, but indeed for the solutions of the problems of the History.

The old Jewish joke illustrates that very well:
When hearing the news of the Flood, a gigantic panic exploded among the peoples. Fear and torment everywhere and in everyone's heart.
Then suddenly, among the Jews, a calm voice resounded from the Jewish radio saying: "Jewish Brothers, we have two days left to learn how to live under the water…"

The secret of "Jewish survival" is thus the faith received from the parents and passed on to the children: This parents-children relationship which is lived by our people!

Our faith and our hope are strengthened and thus fed by the knowledge of God, by our submission without conditions, as well as by the testimony of the past, so of our parents.
It is for this inheritance that we owe to have respect for the past, for the good testimonies as well as for our parents, to follow them so that one day we would also be able to pass on this inheritance to the following generation in our turn.
The glory, the testimony, the Laws and the Word of God...
