The star of David – Magen David
Yaakov, Béla Orbán
The magen David - מָגֵן דָּוִד is the well known shield of king David. It is an hexagram (six angled polygon).
Its origin is probably from India and not Jewish.
It is only from the end of the Middle Ages (mostly in central Europe) that it became to be the symbol to distinguish Jewish communities from the others.
It became very famous when Theodor Herzl put it on the top of his newspaper. Later the Zionists proposed to use it on the flag of Israel in 1897.
There are many explanations concerning the signification of the six-point star.
Many religion of many people gave numerous signification to all the polygons (those of 3-4-5-6-7-8 points).
This way, the meaning of the Jewish six-point polygon is mainly given by the Cabalah which uses the star of David as a symbol and assign a mystical power to it in quiet an occult way.
Although for us, it can just indicate our belonging to our People.
Today, instead of the distinctive yellow star, we often use it from our own will to express in public our identity and belonging to Israel.
There is an explanation according to which the two triangles fusing into each other would symbolize the relationship between God and men. The one coming from above is the divine triangle that goes down to embrace and rise the other, the one that comes from down and points upward. It is indeed a wonderful geometrical representation of the אהבה (ahava) between God and the Chosen People. (this form of love which goes forward and bows before the other). It does also call to mind the love of the Song of Songs, the unchanging Covenant driven by the eternal love…
